OFFREN Summer school 2024

The OFFREN summer school in 2024 was again hosted at 'Builders for Society' in Caen, the top ranked French engineering school. The focus of the course was again on the design of an offshore wind farm and an offshore salmon farm. Students were listening to lectures provided by lecturers from different universities (e.g. Delft University of Technology, Ghent University) and practitioners from the field (e.g. DEME, NOERD). They participated in excursions, performed hydraulic model tests, and produced a design report covering the requests from a detailed task assignment document.

Covering 4 weeks again, the students  worked in groups each of them in a certain role (e.g. project manager, wind farm engineer, supply chain manager, etc.). In the first two weeks, students listened to lectures, ranging from everything around ecosystems, design and engineering of offshore wind parks, aquaculture and fish farm design, supply chain, and business cases. After that students planned and conducted hydraulic model tests for their fish farm design, and started preparing their final reports and presentations. This year, students delivered their report and presentations a day earlier which allowed them to participate in the international RIM2024 conference. There was also a session in which they presented a summary of their work.

Due to a long-standing relationship with the school in Caen, justASK! is regularly performing teaching tasks, both during the regular courses and during the summer school. In collaboration with Builders for Society, the concept of the summer school was developed and initiated several years back. Ever since then, groups of students have developed different designs of wind farms and aquaculture farm at the North coast of France.
